History

  • The Constitution of 1868 gave the members of S.C. General Assembly the authority to create the first office of County Treasurer . Pursuant to the state law, forty-six counties in South Carolina have a Treasurer’s Office. Dorchester County Treasurer is elected for a four-year term in the General Election.

General Information

  • Property tax is one part of revenue that the Treasurer’s receives for all thirty-one taxing entities. Residents of South Carolina are subject to pay yearly ad valorem property taxes on real and personal property. They are billed by the County Auditor who creates the tax bills from various sources: Boats-Motors, Airplanes, Manufactures, Personal Property from State and the Auditor, Tax Assessor-houses, land and buildings. These are from October to March of each year.
  • Vehicles are billed by the calendar and monthly. That source is from the Department of Motor Vehicles and then placed within the appropriate twenty taxing district by the Dorchester County Auditor’s Office.   • The tax revenue received is used by local governmental entities to provide services thru out Dorchester County for your School’s Operating and Debt Service ( School District # Two, Four, BDC Trident Tech, Vocational), Fourteen Fire Districts, and Five Towns/Cities.
