History
- The Constitution of 1868 gave members of the S.C. General Assembly the authority
to create the first office of County Auditor. Pursuant to the state law, each county in
South Carolina (there are 46 counties) has an auditor’s office. Dorchester County
Auditors are elected for a four-year term in the General Election.
- Property tax is the main source of revenue for the state and local government, as
well as public schools. All residents of South Carolina are asked to pay yearly ad
valorem property taxes on real and personal property. Revenue generated is used
by local government to provide the services that Dorchester County residents need,
desire and enjoy.
Statistics
- The auditor’s office levied more than 81 million in real and personal property taxes
for the 2003-2004 fiscal year for multiple tax entities.
- The auditor’s office handles approximately 3,500-4,000 transactions at the window
between both offices per month.
- We have approximately 85,000 – 90,000 vehicles in Dorchester County
- There are approximately 50,000 parcels of land in Dorchester County
