The Dorchester County Emergency Management Department (EMD), in conjunction with LowCountry CERT and Lowe’s home improvement store, is hosting a Hurricane Preparedness Expo on Saturday, July 27, 2013. The event will be held from 9:00am to 12:00pm in the front parking lot of Lowe’s (9600 Dorchester Road, Summerville, SC 29485).

Taking advantage of historically low interest rates in the tax-exempt bond market, Dorchester County issued its General Obligation Refunding Bonds, Series 2013A and Series 2013B on May 15, 2013, to refinance outstanding debt at a savings to the County. The Series 2013A Bonds refinanced debt issued in 2006 to finance a portion of the transportation improvements being funded by the voter-approved one cent sales tax.

During the recent Senior Dinner held at Woodland High School on May 29, 2013, certificates were awarded to those students who successfully completed the newly implemented Work Ethic Certificate Program. The program was developed as an initiative outlined by the 2012 Dorchester County Economic Development Strategic Plan to improve the quality of our young and emerging workforce. Work Ethic was also cited as a barrier to success by Dorchester County industries as a result of the Year-End Survey, which is distributed annually by Dorchester County Economic Development.

According to a press release Tuesday from the South Carolina Department of Commerce, news emerged that the South Carolina Rural Infrastructure Authority (RIA) recently awarded $5.7 million in grants for 17 water and sewer projects in 15 counties across the state. In particular, the Lake Marion Regional Water Agency (LMRWA) will receive $1,555,600 to complete the LMRWA Reach from Holly Hill to Harleyville that is located between Dorchester and Orangeburg Counties.

Dorchester County EMS, in conjunction with MUSC Children’s Hospital and Trident Safe Kids, will host the Summer Safety Festival, an injury prevention and health fair on Saturday, May 18, 2013. This free event, involving multiple local public safety agencies, vendors, and businesses from the tri-county area, will be held at the Dorchester County Human Services Building, 500 North Main Street in Summerville from 10AM to 2PM

Community Emergency Response Teams (CERTs) are groups of volunteer citizens who are trained to assist their community in the event of natural or man-made disasters when emergency services may not be immediately available. The classes are offered free of charge to residents 18 years and older in the Tri-County area by the Dorchester County Emergency Management Department and will be every Tuesday night for 8 weeks from 6-9pm beginning June 18th at the Dorchester County Career and Technology Center.
