 Motor Grader Operator

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF CLASS

 

 

 

The purpose of the class is to operate heavy and/or specialized equipment and/or trucks in the maintenance, construction and/or repair of County roads, drainage systems, sewer and water facilities. In support of other Public Works and Water & Sewer operations, maintains assigned equipment and performs other work as required. The class works according to some procedures but decides how or when to do things; work is reviewed frequently by supervisor.

ESSENTIAL TASKS

The tasks listed below are those that represent the majority of the time spent working in this class. Management may assign additional tasks related to the type of work of the class as necessary.

Regularly operates and performs skilled motorized equipment work in support of street maintenance/repair, inflow/infiltration, wastewater collection, storm water drainage, water distribution, recycling operations and other service operations throughout the County. Performs other general or specialized functions of the Public Works and Sewer & Water Departments.

Has the appropriate training and licenses to operate most motorized heavy equipment as required by Dorchester County. Has the ability to operate four (4) different pieces of equipment at any given point with little supervision.

Primarily operates heavy and/or specialized equipment such as D-3 thru D-7 dozer, menzimuck, motorgrader, gradeall, large hydraulic excavator, or vactor truck at a fully proficient level. Also may operate other smaller equipment regularly operated by a MEO I or II operator. Also may be responsible for some lead responsibility.

Ensures the safety of County equipment, private property, and others by following proper safety procedures, watching for overhead power lines, and checking for traffic and underground utilities, sets out traffic cones, and signs according to the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD); flags traffic as needed.

May perform a variety of manual labor, depending on area of assignment, such as using a rake to spread asphalt or gravel, cutting out pavement with a shovel or jackhammer, installing new pipe, performing taps and, installing fire hydrants, cutting and clearing vegetation and debris, loading and unloading materials, supplies, or equipment, landscaping, tree trimming, clearing debris, laying blocks or brick and various repair or construction projects.

Mixes cement / concrete and performs concrete work as required.

May pick up and transport solid waste and recyclable materials.

Uses hand and power tools in various manual tasks as required.

May perform various duties associated with road system maintenance and construction, including but not limited to constructing, installing and maintaining sewer service lines and mains, manholes and associated appurtenances; completing sewer / manhole taps and service connections; locating and marking sewer lines and taps.

Inspects equipment to ensure proper and safe working condition; reports defects or required maintenance to the supervisor.

Performs routine maintenance and cleaning of assigned tools and equipment.

Uses welding and cutting torches as needed in equipment maintenance.

Performs general landscaping work as required to repair work sites.

Performs all duties in accordance with applicable policies, procedures, laws, regulations, and standards of quality and safety.

May provide crew instruction and leadership as assigned; assists co-workers with various duties as required.

Attends meetings, training, etc., as required to enhance job knowledge and skills.

Performs other duties as required.

Requires doing clerical, manual or technical tasks prescribed by standard practices but which may require computation, the use of several procedures, and the use of independent judgments with obvious choices; requires normal attention for accurate results.

VOCATIONAL/EDUCATIONAL AND EXPERIENCE PREPARATION

Requires high school diploma, GED equivalent or specialized vocational training.

SPECIAL CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES

 

Must possess a valid state driver’s license.

Positions in Sewer & Water must have a CDL license. Positions in Public Works do not require a CDL license, but is preferred.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

 

Requires over two years and up to and including four years.

PHYSICAL AND DEXTERITY REQUIREMENTS:

Requires heavy work that involves constantly lifting, pushing or raising objects, exerting between 50 and 75 pounds of force on a recurring basis and over 100 pounds of force on a frequent basis.

ENVIRONMENTAL HAZARDS

 

The job may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, traffic, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, and toxic/caustic chemicals.

SENSORY REQUIREMENTS

 

The job requires normal visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities, color perception.
