History/Mission Statement

In 1989, the South Carolina Association of County Veterans Officers was chartered through the South Carolina Department of State, resulting in state statute section 25-11-40 which addresses the criteria for county veterans affairs officers and offices. Today each county in South Carolina has similar offices, most of which are members of the National Association of County Veteran Service Officers. Our collective goal is to serve veterans and their families with applications for veteran and survival benefits from the Department of Veterans Affairs, provide assistance in the preparation of necessary forms required by the Department of Defense, and coordinate with appropriate state agencies to help veterans and their families obtain certain state benefits.

According to the 2007 statistics from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the veteran population in Dorchester County was about 16,137 and the expenditures by Veterans Affairs in Dorchester County amounted to 47.3 million dollars, reflecting our commitment to the county and its veterans.

You may visit our offices in Summerville at the County's Human Services Building located at 500 North Main Street, and in St. George in the Department of Social Services Building located at 201 Johnston Street.
